Why Is Hip Hop Music So Stagnent?

In my opinion, hip hop has music has been very stagnent recently and artists need to be more inventive. It’s especially fitting that i just started listening to this new NERD album (Seeing Sounds) as i am typing this. This is the kind of interesting, genre-bending music that i would love to hear more of regularly.

Heres a perfect example of what im talking about:

I know its blasphemous to say to hip hop heads… but im not really trying to hear another status-quo Preimo beat.

He obviously has hits and I completely respect his stats, but he hasnt exactly reinvented his sound recently. I think his lack of evolution in sound exemplifies the problems within hip hop right now. He hasn’t had a reason to try anything new because all his fans seem to be happy with him putting out beat after beat that sounds exactly the same: has the same scratches in the sames places, and samples very similar songs.  People seem to be cool with this.  They somehow still get excited for a new premo track… I dont get it, Ive heard that shit before, i want to hear something new!

I want to hear my favorite hip hop artists take risks, whether they work or not. At least that way we know we’ll get something new and interesting.  It’s same principles you encounter in investing, you can’t make any money without assuming any risk, and the higher the risk factor, the more money you can make.  Well hip hop has all its money in CD’s right now and I think it needs to move a least a little bit into the stock market, or venture funds, or hedge funds.

Why aren’t hip hop artists taking risks?  Is it their fault for not having the balls to try something new? Is it the fans fault for not being accepting of anything outside the norm? Is it the labels fault for trying to generalize the music to make it appeal to many different tastes?  Is it just general sociological principles  about people preferring what is familiar to them?

I don’t know, I would say its a combo of all those reasons, and I don’t really have any answers.

I guess the moral of the story is I just wanna hear something fresh that brings a buzz back to hip hop music.  I want to hear something that blows my mind that gives me that indescribable feeling that I know I’m listening to something special for the first time.  I dont want to listen to music just for the sake of listening to music.
