Eric Adelson presented a very interesting idea in this article over at espn.com. Should Tiger Woods start his own world tour, seperate from the PGA tour. I think this is a facinating idea, and would love to see it happen. Tiger could play the still play the 4 majors and maybe an odd PGA tour event or two each year. And on top of that he would play 6 tournaments on his own tour - one in each continent that is suitable for golf (sorry antarctica).
The upside is that it would help create world-wide exposure for golf, it would allow Tiger to build his brand and give back in ways beyond what is currently capable, and it would just be plain exciting. Tiger would call the shots: he would determine where they played, who played, and everything.
The downside, as some commenters pointed out, is that everything hinges on Tiger. If he doesnt play (hes hurt or he eventually retires), then the tour loses its value to fans. I think this is a legitimate argument early on after its conception, but what if down the line, an up and coming prodigy takes the golf world by storm, and starts drawing Tiger comparisons (a la Kobe or LeBron vs. MJ). They could be playing against the legend, trying to dethrone him. Or if hes already on the way out, they could re-inject the tour and the game with fan support the same way Tiger does now.
I’m not sure if there is anyway this whole idea could actually ever happen, but I’m rooting for it because it would be incredible to see.
